Do you want to become a mentor?

The mentor team of the Adoptee Mentoring Society plays a pivotal role in supporting mentees by sharing their personal adoptee experiences through virtual one-on-one sessions and group mentorship in The Adoptee Lounge.

  • Mentors are trained to uphold healthy boundaries and provide empathetic guidance. Mentors foster growth and exploration by creating supportive, non-judgmental spaces.

    Additional requirements include:

    • Provide constructive feedback to fellow cohort members (via asynchronous review of recorded sessions, once per month)

    • Nurture our AMS community by actively contributing to our Slack #Loungers channel (i.e. consistently posting or responding and reacting to others’ posts).

    • Commit to a 1-year cohort contract (estimated 12-15 hours per month)

    • Attend the following mandatory meetings:

      • March 8-9, 2025 (Seattle, WA) - In-person training & retreat

        • Travel to Seattle, accommodation, and some meals will be fully covered by AMS.

      • (TBD March/ April) - 2 hour virtual facilitation training for Lounge mentors

      • (TBD March/ April) - 90-minute virtual practice sessions (must complete at least three)

      • Monthly, last Thursdays at 5:30-6:30pm PT/ 8:30-9:30pm ET (Virtual) - Mentor Team Meetings

      • Quarterly check-ins (Virtual):

        • 3-month onboarding check-in with Executive Director - AMS and each mentor will have the opportunity to assess whether both would like to continue this working relationship

        • 6, 9 & 12-month feedback meetings with AMS Staff

    • $3,000 stipend for a year-long contract

    • Access to one free Adoptee Lounge per month throughout team membership

    • Access to consultations with a licensed psychologist regarding mentor-mentee relationships and interactions

    • Foster connections with and learn from an intimate team of other adoptee-mentors who are dedicated to their own and each other’s personal and professional growth 

    • Monthly team coaching by the Executive Director

    • Opportunities to attend conferences/events

    • Comprehensive mentor training, facilitated by content experts

    • Opportunity to connect with an expansive community of adoptees who are eager to meet with you!

  • Successful mentors are eager to learn with and from their team members, are committed to fostering an engaging online community of adoptees, and bring levity to adoption conversations while maintaining high ethical standards.

    Applicants for the mentor role must:

    • be an adoptee

    • be 25 years of age or older

    • be a part of our #Loungers community

      • Must have attended at least two Adoptee Lounges prior to applying to become a mentor

      • Must be an active contributor in our Slack #Loungers channel (i.e. consistently posting or responding and reacting to others’ posts).

  • Our Mentors embody adaptability, compassion, and openness, encouraging self-discovery and a sense of agency for their mentees.

    Radical Acceptance - Mentors treat all mentees with unconditional positive regard.

    Inch wide, mile deep - Mentors prioritize deep transformative work, in service of community, over broad surface-level work.

The Application Process

  • All candidates will be considered for the role of one-on-one mentor. Once selected, following the cohort onboarding and training period, select cohort members will be invited to additionally offer Adoptee Lounges.

    1. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through January 17, 2025. 

    2. After you submit your application (including completed application and reference form), our team will contact you within three business days to let you know about next steps.

    3. Some applicants will be invited to join a 60-minute interview via Zoom with the Executive Director and Program Coordinator.

    4. Following the initial interview, some applicants will be invited to join a 45-minute virtual 1:1 mentorship role-play with AMS Staff.

    5. Applicants who complete the final interview round may be asked to complete a background check.

    • Early February: A maximum of 4 Mentors will be selected

    • March 8-9, 2025 (Seattle, WA): In-person Orientation & Training

    • March-April: Virtual practice sessions

    • March-April: Mentor introductory phase 

    • May 2025: Begin Mentoring
